IN MEMORY YET NOT FORGOTTEN: PART X

The deaths of parents-in-love

My mother-in-law died in 1995. The late Priscilla Wambaire Wandũ, mother to my late husband, was a strong and beautiful woman. Jotham traveled from the US to Kenya to attend his mother’s burial. The following year, in 1996, my father-in-law, Josiah Wandu Mugweru also died. This time four members of the family: Jotham, Grace, Millicent, and Jennifer traveled to pay their respects.

The biggest challenge was raising funds to cover airfare and travel expenses for all four individuals to last the duration of the trip. In addition, to what each individual had saved, the Kenyan community’s effort to help raise money was a generous act that will never be forgotten. The other challenge was to obtain travel documents from the office of immigration, request days off from work, complete school assignments, arranging care for our young children that could not travel, etc. My late husband’s mother and father, Wambaire and Wandũ, were buried on their land in Kaharo village, Thīmu, Gikondi location in Mukurweini, Nyeri.
