About Grace: Trusting in God’s Purpose and Power for Your Life

A Silent Generation’s Journey: From Obedience to Resilience

I belong to what is known as the Silent Generation—born before 1946, a time when we listened, obeyed, and seldom questioned the orders we were given. As the firstborn of ten children in my family, I was thrust into a role of responsibility from an early age. My mother often left me in charge of my siblings while she attended to household chores. I was tasked with ensuring we played harmoniously, without disturbing her or causing tears. If any sibling cried, we were all held accountable—a lesson in collective responsibility and the importance of fostering peace.

When my parents and youngest sibling were detained during Kenya’s Mau Mau War of Independence, my responsibilities grew exponentially. At a tender age, I found myself caring for my siblings under circumstances I barely understood. When my family reunited, my mother brought us into the Presbyterian Church of East Africa, and at fourteen, I gave my life to Christ. That decision marked the beginning of a journey of faith and resilience that would guide me through life’s challenges.

Education Against All Odds

Starting school at age seventeen and completing my secondary education at twenty-six might seem like a delayed journey, but for me, it was a triumph. By fifty-seven, I earned my bachelor’s degrees; by 73, I completed my master’s. Today, I am pursuing a Ph.D. in Leadership in Ministry and the Marketplace. These milestones are a testament to God’s grace and purpose—reminders that it’s never too late to pursue the dreams He plants in our hearts.

Faith, Family, and Purpose

My life has been an intricate tapestry of roles: caregiver, culinary professional, minister’s wife, student, pastor, and now, a family matriarch of a blended family numbering over fifty-five. Each role has deepened my understanding of God’s purpose for families. From working as a cooks’ supervisor in boarding schools to serving as a clinical nurse assistant to a pastor, I’ve learned that caring for others is not just an obligation but a sacred calling.

As a widow after forty-one years of marriage to my first husband, Rev. Dr. Jotham Gatungo Wandu, I leaned on God’s strength to endure. Seven years later, I remarried at the age of seventy-five, proving that God’s plans often defy our expectations.

The Family: A Gift to Cherish and Protect

Families face countless challenges—wars, immigration, separation, and the pressures of modern life. I’ve experienced these struggles firsthand. My parents’ marriage was strained by Kenya’s fight for independence. My siblings and I were separated early in life, each sent to fend for ourselves as babysitters or shepherds. Yet, through it all, God’s grace sustained us.

The family is central to God’s design, a foundation upon which love, faith, and resilience are built. My vision for family extends beyond bloodlines—it’s about unity, forgiveness, and mutual support, rooted in faith.

A Message for the Hopeless: Trust God’s Plan

To anyone feeling hopeless, I urge you to remember this: God is not done with you. No matter where you start or how delayed your journey feels, His timing is perfect. My life is a living testimony that He uses our trials to shape us for His purposes.

When I reflect on my life, I see the hand of God in every moment—in the struggles, the triumphs, and even the heartaches. I pray my experiences encourage you to trust in His plan, even when the way forward seems unclear.

A Journey Worth Sharing

I am writing a book and starting a blog to share my story. It is my prayer that these platforms inspire and uplift families across generations. Whether you’re in your 20s, navigating midlife, or approaching retirement, my story offers lessons of perseverance, faith, and the boundless power of God’s grace.

May you find hope, healing, and inspiration as you journey through life, trusting the Almighty to lead you toward His purpose.

With love and prayers,

Grace Joseph
